General Information

Department of Child Development has been established with the aim of training Child Development Specialists who serve society, educators and children aged between 0-18 along with improving support programs for all the developmental stages (mental, language, motor, self care, social and emotional) of the children, who normally developing, need special care, need protection (children living in normal/special care providing institutions, working, immigrant and delinquent) and children in hospital.

Students who scored in type of equal weight points in OSS (Selection and Placement of Students in Higher Education Institutions in Turkey) exam are admitted to the Department of Child Development. Department's yearly quota is 50 students.

By year end of 2008 our department has 2584 graduates since its establishment. Our graduates with the title of Child Educationalist show the performance of developmental diagnosis and according to that diagnosis provide early intervention programs with an eclectically approach, to provide consultancy for families; also serve to apply precautions suitable to support the development after the diagnosis for the children who shows developmental deviation with the basis of child, family and teacher/educators. Also similarly in special education field, diagnosing handicapped children's developments, they serve in the frame of multidisciplinary approach with the related professionals to take necessary precautions for the child and the family. 

History

Department of Child Development was established in 1968 as a part of Home Economics Academy of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Health Sciences under the name of Child Development and Education.

In 1972 by Senate Consult of Hacettepe University as being a department of Home Economics Academy directly in relation with Rectorate. By 1976 it started its special education studies and its infrastructure works were finalized in 1982. At 23.12.1982 Department of Special Education was opened for education. Child Development and Education Department has continued its activities in two areas as: "Division of Child Development and Education" and "Division of Special Education". Division of Child Development is the first in its field and Division of Special Education is the third division in Turkey. Science Specialty and doctoral programs have started in 1972.

The name of Child Development and Education department was changed as "Child Health and Education" by a resolution of YOK (Board of Higher Education) in 04.03 1987, and then re-changed as "Child Development and Education" by a resolution of YOK in 23.03. 1996.

The department has been restructured by 21.11.2007 dated and B.30.0.E.Ö.B.0.00.00.03-04-01-4351 numbered the decree of the Council of Ministers as Child Development Department as a part of Faculty of Health Sciences.
